NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has given green signal to Uttar Pradesh urban local body elections with OBC reservation. On the orders of the apex court, the state government had formed the UP Backward Classes Commission to decide the reservation of backward classes in the body elections. The commission had submitted its report to the government several days ago. On the basis of this report filed in the Supreme Court, the way for the urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh was cleared. Noting that a dedicated commission set up to examine the issue of Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation has submitted its final report, the SC allowed the Uttar Pradesh government to issue the notification for conducting urban local body elections.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala disposed of the matter by clarifying that the directions given in its order shall not be used as precedents.
On January 4, 2023, the Supreme Court had stayed the Allahabad High Court’s direction to the Uttar Pradesh Election Commission to go ahead with the urban local body elections without reservation for OBCs.
