From ashes to phoenix

My entrepreneurial odyssey in the Indian real estate

EVERY journey begins with a single step, and mine started with a leap of faith into the uncharted waters of Indian real estate. As a first-generation en trepreneur, my story isn’t just about soaring successes but also about navigating tumul tuous times with resilience and creativity—a concept many of you might know as ‘jugaad’.

The 1980s marked a transformative era for India, yet the real estate sector faced numerous challenges. My brother and I en tered this landscape by acquiring our first plot in Powai, Mumbai. This wasn’t just a piece of land; it was a blank canvas, ready for a phoenix to rise.

For those unfamiliar, jugaad is an Indian term for an innovative fix or simple workaround. It’s about finding solutions with limited resources. In our early days, jugaad was our saving grace.

Growing up, we were never taught to dream small. Our father, Dr LH Hirananda ni, a renowned ENT surgeon, instilled in us the values of hard work and integrity. These principles became the cornerstone of our entrepreneurial journey. The initial phase was fraught with obstacles – outdated regu lations, bureaucratic red tape, and capital shortages.

Our secret weapon

For those unfamiliar, jugaad is an Indian term for an innovative fix or simple work around. It’s about finding solutions with limit ed resources. In our early days, jugaad was our saving grace. From sourcing material to managing labour, we applied ingenuity where conventional methods failed.

Our project in Powai wasn’t just about con structing buildings; it was about transforming a blueprint into a tangible reality. As I reflect on our journey, the entrepre neurial zest that fueled our rise from ashes to a phoenix legacy was deeply rooted in constant learning and adaptability. My jour ney is a testament to the fact that entrepre neurship is not a sprint but a marathon. It’s about the steadfast persistence that keeps you moving forward, despite the odds.

Remember, every entrepreneurial saga begins with a spark of innovation and a dash of jugaad. So, pour your heart into your grind, and everything else will follow.
