In a pivotal moment for regional diplomacy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, held a significant telephonic conversation, reinforcing their commitment to peace and security in West Asia.

The dialogue was prompted by recent maritime security threats, including the drone attack on an Indian merchant ship off Veraval’s coast and another assault in the Red Sea. These incidents underscored the urgent need for collaborative efforts in ensuring maritime safety and stability in the region.

During their conversation, both leaders reviewed the ongoing development of the India-Saudi Arabia strategic partnership, a relationship that has been strengthening, especially after the Crown Prince’s state visit to India in September 2023. The focus was on a future-oriented bilateral agenda, showcasing a commitment to deepening ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation.

Central to their discussions was the tumultuous situation in West Asia, with both leaders expressing grave concerns over terrorism, violence, and the tragic loss of civilian lives. PM Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position on the Israel-Palestine issue, emphasising the importance of continued humanitarian aid for those affected.

The conversation also highlighted the need for maintaining maritime security and freedom of navigation, crucial for the stability and economic prosperity of the region. This aspect is particularly vital given the strategic location of both nations in key maritime routes.

PM Modi and Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to work in unison for peace, security, and stability in West Asia. This collaboration signals a significant step towards addressing the challenges facing the region and showcases the growing importance of Indo-Saudi relations on the global stage.

Their agreement to remain in regular touch further cements this burgeoning alliance, promising a future of shared efforts in tackling the complex issues facing West Asia and beyond.
