SUHAIL bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, led the UAE delegation at the world’s inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in the Belgian capital, Brussels. It was organised and hosted by the Belgian government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The UAE’s presence at the summit underscored global confidence in its impactful role and swift progress in nuclear energy projects. These achievements serve as a model for nations interested in nuclear energy, highlighting the UAE’s significant contribution to advancing clean energy technologies worldwide.

The summit served as a platform for world leaders to delve into the role of nuclear power in propelling sustainable development. Cochaired by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, the summit followed the landmark inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023.

Engaging in high-level discussions, Al Mazrouei held talks with prominent figures including Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the US Department of Commerce Marisa Lago; European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson; and IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi. These deliberations underscored the UAE’s significant role in spearheading global advancements in clean energy technologies.

During the summit, leaders and representatives from 32 countries endorsed a series of measures aimed at expanding nuclear capacity to address climate change and bolster energy security. These measures encompassed financing, technological innovation, regulatory cooperation, and workforce training. The declaration reiterated a steadfast commitment to constructing new nuclear power plants and deploying advanced reactors while upholding stringent safety and security standards.

“We, the leaders of countries operating nuclear power plants, or expanding or embarking on or exploring the option of nuclear power, support enhancing efforts to facilitate the mobilisation of public and private investments towards additional nuclear power projects,” stated the summit’s declaration. Furthermore, it reaffirmed a resolute commitment to nuclear energy as an integral component of global endeavours to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable development.
