THE UAE cabinet recently ratified the National Policy on Biofuels, marking a crucial stride towards sustainable energy practices. The new policy stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to transitioning towards clean and renewable energy sources.

The initiative was led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), in collaboration with key stakeholders from both public and private sectors.

The policy aims to create an environment that supports using sustainable fuel options. It is integral to the broader objective of augmenting the energy matrix while curbing carbon emissions.

According to the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the new policy will act as a cornerstone in the decarbonisation agenda of the country. “The policy will play an important role in our decarbonisation drive. It will contribute to reducing carbon emissions through increasing the consumption of biodiesel by 20 per cent by 2050. It will lower the carbon footprint of diesel cars by 75 per cent in case of consuming biodiesel by 100 percent”, Al Mazrouei said.

He also highlighted policy’s potential impact, envisioning a significant reduction in carbon emissions through a substantial increase in biodiesel consumption by 2050. “The National Policy on Biofuels will help achieve the objectives of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. It will enhance the implementation of circular economy principles in various sectors, such as infrastructure, mobility, and manufacturing, and will drive economic growth through using waste as input for production”, he said.

Moreover, Al Mazrouei underscored the policy’s alignment with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, underscoring its role in fostering circular economy principles and propelling economic growth through innovative utilisation of waste materials.

Industry leaders echoed sentiments of support and commitment towards the policy’s objectives. Director General of the Emirates General Petroleum Corporation – Emarat, Ali Khalifa Alshamsi, emphasised the strategic importance of this policy shift in bolstering the UAE’s stature as a frontrunner in clean energy initiatives.

Similarly, ENOC Group, CEO, Saif Humaid Al Falasi, commended the government’s forward-looking approach, citing ENOC’s proactive role in advancing biofuel technologies since 2017.
