NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar presented a broad vision and highlighted concrete initiatives that the India has implemented and will carry forward during its presidency of the G20.
Speaking at the Foreign Ministers’ Session on G20 at the Voice of Global South Summit on January 13, he emphasised the fact that India and Global South share not only a “common future but also a common past”, and both suffer under the “current world order”.
From the podium of the Voice of Global South Summit, Jaishankar shared the blueprint of the path India is committed to. He said that to bring about “Global South sensitive model of globalisation”, India will focus on three key areas.
The first, he said, was a new model of globalisation, the one which is holistic- “from self-centered globalisation to human-centered globalisation”. The second is restructuring of collaboration in the field of innovation &technology, where a hierarchical model which promotes “technological patronage” is replaced with “Global South-led innovations for societal transformation”; and lastly, reimagining and shift in development cooperation – “from debt creating projects to a demand-driven and sustainable development cooperation”.
It is a plan of action where priorities, concerns and challenges of Global South take the centre-stage, he said, adding that India is committed to, “faster rebalancing, more multipolarity and reformed multilateralism” but not at the cost of Global South.
Jaishankar called for “de-centralising and de-risking globalisation” and assured those present that during its presidency India would work towards a model that offers “greater opportunities” to nations of Global South.
