NEW DELHI: In a world where global leaders often seek common ground, it is not unusual for heads of state to find inspiration in one another’s leadership styles. Such is the case with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg.
Their unique camaraderie and admiration for each other have not only captured attention within their respective nations but have also become a testament to the power of collaboration on the international stage.
Beyond matters of commerce, PM Bettel’s deep admiration for PM Modi has become increasingly evident. During the World Economic Forum meet held in Davos earlier this year, PM Bettel expressed his appreciation for the Indian leader to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. As CM Shinde recalled, PM Bettel is a self-proclaimed “bhakt” (follower) of Modi Ji. Such gestures not only highlight the global popularity of PM Modi but also underscore the respect he garners from leaders worldwide.
The warmth shared between PM Modi and PM Bettel was on full display during the November 2021 COP26 meet in Glasgow. As the world focused on climate change and sustainable development, these two leaders embraced each other, symbolising a unity of purpose in tackling the pressing challenges facing our planet.
The embrace captured by ITV’s political editor, Robert Peston, captured the attention of many, with Peston aptly noting the significance of “human capital embracing financial capital.”
It all began on November 19, 2020, when PM Modi and PM Bettel engaged in a groundbreaking online summit, defying the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. That historic bilateral meeting marked a significant milestone, as it was the first of its kind in nearly two decades. The leaders, who had previously met three times, seized this opportunity to deepen their bond and explore avenues of cooperation that would benefit both nations.
