Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of an epoch in Indian cinema

NEW DELHI:The passing away of Dharmendra, one of the last legends of the golden era in films, marks the end of an epoch in Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy spanning over six decades and more than 300 films. The e much-loved ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood died on November 24, at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 89.

Tributes poured in nationwide, including heartfelt words from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the actor’s deep imprint on Indian culture.

Early life, stardom Born on December 8, 1935, in Punjab, Dharmendra began his journey from humble roots, displaying an early passion for acting. He debuted in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, and rocketed to stardom after his breakthrough film Phool Aur Patthar (1966). Initially cast as a romantic lead, Dharmendra’s rugged charm transformed him into an action superstar, dazzling audiences in classics such as Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Jugnu, and Rakhwala.

Dharmendra’s role as Veeru in the legendary Sholay (1975) remains one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated performances. His versatility shone in comedies like Chupke Chupke and in thrillers such as Yaadon Ki Baarat.

Dharmendra starred with top artistes, including Hema Malini – his longtime co-star and later his wife – and remained a box office draw for over three decades. Known for his humility and warmth, he was affectionately called ‘Garam Dharam’ by fans who cherished his magnetic screen presence. A lasting legacy Apart from his cinematic achievements, Dharmendra served as a Member of Parliament in the 2000s, representing Bikaner, Rajasthan. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his contribution to arts. Dharmendra’s enduring romance with Hema Malini and the illustrious film careers of his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, ensured his family remained a hallmark of Bollywood royalty.

Dharmendra’s final performance will be seen in Ikkis, slated for release in December 2025, a testament to his unwavering vitality even in his twilight years. His films, cherished by generations, will continue to inspire and entertain, immortalising Dharmendra as one of Indian cinema’s greatest icons
