Delhi to get advanced security shield

Delhi is set to be protected by a dedicated, multi-layered air defence architecture, informally dubbed the “Capital Dome,” aimed at shielding Delhi from a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

The proposed system is designed to provide round-the-clock protection against both external aerial attacks and asymmetric threats, including low-flying unmanned systems launched from within or near the capital region.
Once operational, the Capital Dome will mark a significant step in India’s air defence posture, transforming Delhi into one of the most heavily protected urban centres in the country.

Once operational, the Capital Dome will mark a significant step in India’s air defence posture, transforming Delhi into one of the most heavily protected urban centres in the country

According to defence sources, the dome will integrate multiple indigenous air defence systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), forming a layered defensive envelope over the National Capital Region. Central to this architecture will be the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system and the Vertically Launched Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM), both designed to counter fast-moving aerial threats at short to medium ranges with high reaction speed and accuracy.

QRSAM, mounted on highly mobile platforms, will provide rapid-response capability against aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles operating at low altitudes, ensuring flexibility and quick redeployment as threat vectors evolve. Complementing it, VLSRSAM will offer vertical launch capability, allowing 360-degree engagement of targets without the need to reorient launchers, a critical advantage in a dense and complex urban threat environment like Delhi.
