Ten Boxing Medals, and What Came Next

NEW DELHI: India finished the Glasgow Commonwealth Games fourth, with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. Ten of those medals, and seven of the golds, came out of a single boxing ring.

Seven golds is the largest number any nation has won in boxing at a single Commonwealth Games. It is also more than half of India’s entire gold count across every sport at these Games, which is the fact that makes the achievement slightly uncomfortable as well as remarkable. A country that wins fourteen medals across a dozen disciplines has a broad sporting base. A country that wins ten in one discipline has an outstanding programme in that discipline — and the honest question is how the other programmes get there.

Seven golds from one sport: India’s boxers returned ten medals in Glasgow, the most any nation has taken in boxing at a single Commonwealth Games, and more than half of India’s total gold count.

One outstanding programme is a result. Several outstanding programmes are a system. Glasgow shows India has built the first and is partway to the second.

At a Glance

• India’s final position: fourth, with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver, nine bronze
• Boxing: ten medals including seven golds — a record for any nation in the sport at a single Games
• Para events: seven medals (three gold, two silver, two bronze), equalling India’s combined total from all previous editions
• Gulveer Singh: silver and bronze — first Indian track-and-field athlete with two individual medals at one Commonwealth Games, and India’s only multiple medallist in Glasgow
• Also cleared on July 31: a revamped Khelo India scheme and enhanced Assistance to National Sports Federations
• Next: Ahmedabad

Two results in Glasgow suggest the system is being built rather than merely hoped for. The first is the para campaign: seven medals, three of them gold, equalling India’s combined para tally from every previous Commonwealth Games. A single Games matching all the others put together is not an improvement curve; it is evidence of a pipeline that did not previously exist and now does. The second is Gulveer Singh, whose silver and bronze made him the first Indian track-and-field athlete to take two individual medals at one Commonwealth Games. Athletics is the hardest place in the programme to buy success, because the depth of the global field is unforgiving, and it is therefore the most reliable indicator of underlying quality.

The timing of what followed is worth recording. On July 31 the Cabinet cleared a revamped Khelo India scheme and enhanced assistance to National Sports Federations — the two instruments that fund, respectively, the base of the pyramid and the federations that convert the base into teams. The lesson Glasgow offers those instruments is specific rather than general. Boxing did not become India’s strongest Commonwealth sport by accident or by a single funding decision; it was built through sustained coaching depth, competition exposure and a domestic circuit that keeps producing contenders. Replicating that is a matter of patience applied to two or three more disciplines at a time, not to all of them at once. With Ahmedabad ahead, the disciplines chosen in the next twelve months will be visible in the medal table long after this one is filed away.
