Jaishankar in Moscow for the Twenty-Seventh Time
External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar co-chairs the 27th India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation in Moscow today with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, and meets Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Logistics, transport, energy and technology head the working agenda.

Internal Security: Eight Hundred and Fifty Officers, Two Days, One Agenda
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates the two-day 9th National Security Strategies Conference in New Delhi today. More than 850 officers from the security and police forces attend in hybrid format. The conference exists because the Prime Minister directed that it be held annually — its value is continuity, not novelty.

Weather :Orange Alert Across Four States Today
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha and east Madhya Pradesh today, with heavy rain also forecast over coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Karnataka. Orange means be prepared — one step below the red that means take action.

Agriculture :India’s First Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Seed
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launches India’s first non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru village, Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh, today. High-expansion is the commercial variable: it measures how much volume a kernel yields when popped, and it is what separates an imported bag from a domestic one.

Space : The PM’s Ask of the Space Start-ups: Draw Talent In
Marking National Space Day on 23 August, the Prime Minister told CEOs and founders of 20 space start-ups to build an ecosystem good enough that global talent chooses India. The date commemorates Chandrayaan-3’s landing near the lunar south pole in 2023 — a first for any country.

Culture : Tribal Languages Get a Three-Day National Hearing
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs opens a three-day National Conclave on Tribal Languages and Museums in Mysuru today. The agenda is documentation, preservation and revitalisation — and the museum half matters, because a language recorded but not spoken is an archive, not a living tongue.

Trade : July Exports Were the Highest Any July Has Been
Merchandise exports reached $44.24 billion in July 2026, up 19.63 per cent and the best July on record. The detail inside: petroleum products and electronics alone supplied about 68 per cent of the entire year-on-year increase, which makes the headline growth narrower than it looks.

Sport : The Divyang XI Comes Home From England
Union Home Minister Amit Shah received India’s Divyang men’s cricket team in New Delhi after its tour of England for the India–England Men’s Mixed Disability T20I Series 2026. Mixed disability cricket fields players across amputee, visual, hearing and physical impairment categories in a single side — a format India has taken to quickly.

Pilgrimage : Four Hundred and Sixty-Four Home From Kailash
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim’s Nathu La route concluded on 23 August with 464 pilgrims across 10 batches, having begun on 20 June. That is an average of about 46 pilgrims a batch over 65 days — a deliberately small throughput on a route at over 14,000 feet.

Water : The Reservoirs Are Fifty-Six Per Cent Empty
Live storage across 166 major reservoirs stands at 44.39 per cent of capacity. The monsoon deficit has narrowed from about 35 per cent in June to roughly 12.6 per cent by 19 August, but storage is the number that governs the rabi crop, not rainfall — and there are five weeks of monsoon left to fill it.
