A Duck in the First Over, and Still 294 Ahead

NEW DELHI: India lost their opener to the first over of the day at Galle and were still 294 runs clear by lunch. The margin says more about the first innings than about the morning.

India began day four of the first Test at Galle with a first-innings lead of 178, Sri Lanka having been bowled out for 284 after recovering from 90 for five — a maiden Test century from Sonal Dinusha and 80 from Niroshan Dickwella supplying the resistance. The fourth morning began badly for the visitors: Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a duck in the opening over of the second innings. KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal then added 65 at a brisk rate before Prabath Jayasuriya struck twice, having Rahul caught for 35 off an aerial shot and trapping Shubman Gill lbw for 8. Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel were together at lunch with the lead at 294.

Galle, day four: India led by 294 at lunch on 18 August, having lost their opener to the first over of the innings.

Sri Lanka were 90 for five and finished on 284. That recovery of 194 runs for the last five wickets is the reason India are setting a target at all rather than enforcing one.

At a Glance

• Match: First Test, Sri Lanka v India, Galle, 15–19 August 2026
• Sri Lanka first innings: 284, from 90 for 5
• Sonal Dinusha: maiden Test century • Niroshan Dickwella: 80
• India’s first-innings lead: 178
• Day four, second innings: Jaiswal 0 • Rahul 35 • Gill 8 lbw
• Rahul–Padikkal partnership: 65
• Prabath Jayasuriya: both morning wickets
• At lunch: Pant and Jurel batting • lead 294
• Second Test: Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, 23–27 August

The number that shaped this match was made on day three, not day four. Sri Lanka at 90 for five in their first innings were heading for a deficit large enough to make the rest of the Test a formality. They added 194 for the last five wickets, and the difference between a 178-run lead and a 300-run lead is the difference between India declaring on the fourth evening and India having already won. Dinusha’s first Test hundred was made in exactly the circumstances a batsman remembers — the top order gone, the follow-on in view, and the bowling side’s field spread for the tail.

India’s response has been to bat at pace rather than safety, which is the right reading of a Galle surface on day four. Sixty-five runs from Rahul and Padikkal at a brisk rate, after losing an opener in the first over, is the tempo of a side setting a target with a session to spare rather than one protecting a lead. Jayasuriya’s two wickets in the morning confirm that the surface is offering the home spinners something, which is also the argument for India batting quickly and leaving themselves the maximum number of overs to bowl at it. A result at Galle on day four or five would send India into the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on 23 August a match up, and would close out a strong month for Indian sport that began with a 39-medal Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow.
