India builds giant water batteries to store solar power

NEW DELHI, 20 October Solar power peaks at noon; India’s demand peaks after dark. The oldest large battery for that gap is a hill with a lake at the top and another at the bottom. Water is pumped uphill when power is plentiful and let down through turbines when it is not.

India has 7.43 GW of such pumped storage running across 10 projects, according to a PIB backgrounder of 19 October 2026 on Ministry of Power data.

Pumped storage in operation, August 2026: 7.43 GW (10 projects)

Rubio in Mumbai as India-US trade deal nears finish line

MUMBAI, 20 October— United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Mumbai on 20 October for talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. “We’re trying to finalise the trade deal with India right now. We’re very close to doing that,” he told reporters in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

India’s merchandise exports to the United States were about $51 billion in April–September 2026; a trade agreement would give that flow firmer rules.

India, Saudi Arabia explore power-grid interconnection

NEW DELHI, 20 October Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal and Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs, Nasser Al-Qahtani, reviewed the proposed India–Saudi Arabia electrical interconnection at a virtual meeting, the Ministry of Power said on 19 October 2026. The Saudi side sought cooperation on extra-high-voltage transmission, on running grids with a large share of renewable power, on supplying the growing load of data centres, and on updating grid codes. An interconnection would let the two grids exchange power, and the Saudi list reads as a market for Indian transmission know-how.
