New Delhi : India is set to become the stage for one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is in talks with Indian partners to establish a 1-gigawatt data centre in the country. The project, part of the company’s $500-billion Stargate initiative, would be a first-of-its-kind in Asia and could cement India’s place in the global AI map, according to well informed sources.

Big Investment, Bigger Impact

The scale of the proposed facility is immense. A 1GW data centre requires billions of dollars in capital investment, promising a direct boost to sectors such as construction, engineering, IT services and advanced electronics. Thousands of jobs could be created during both construction and operations, with ripple effects across the wider technology supply chain.

OpenAI’s India data centre is more than an infrastructure project—it is an economic catalyst, a clean energy driver, and a symbol of India’s emergence as a global digital superpower.

Green Power at the Core

Such infrastructure demands vast amounts of electricity, but the emphasis is expected to be on renewable energy. India’s solar and wind sectors stand to gain from long-term power purchase agreements, while new grid upgrades would follow. This would not only support the country’s clean energy targets but also provide stability and growth for renewable developers.

Building India’s AI Strength

The project also promises to reshape India’s role in the AI economy. With world-class computing power available locally, Indian firms and startups will have the ability to design and deploy advanced AI solutions at scale. According to reliable sources this could shift India from being largely a service hub to becoming a centre for AI-driven innovation and product development.

A Strategic Moment

The timing carries geopolitical weight. U.S.–India relations are currently under pressure due to tariffs and trade disputes, but technology collaboration remains a strong common ground. OpenAI’s plan dovetails with its “OpenAI for Countries” initiative, which seeks to build AI infrastructure anchored in democratic values. Locating a flagship facility in India would strengthen strategic ties and provide a counterbalance to China’s expanding AI footprint.

Blitz View

Beyond the numbers, the project links directly to India’s Viksit Bharat @ 2047 vision. A domestic AI backbone of this scale could transform healthcare, education, governance and finance, propelling India towards becoming a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy.
