NEW DELHI: At a time when several cities are grappling with pollution, the Government has found higher than mandated fleet emission levels in top carmakers such as Hyundai, Kia, Honda Cars and Renault.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is recommending penalties running into hundreds of crores against the companies and the carmakers will now have to do urgent course correction towards greener and less-polluting vehicles to stay within prescribed limits, said sources.
The stiff penalties stem from the upgrade in Corporate Average Fuel Economy norms this January.
Under the norms, limits are set on the emission of carbon dioxide, these are computed by taking into account the weight of individual models and numbers sold, As per the Energy Conservation Bill, which was approved by the Parliament in Dec 2022, any company with higher carbon emissions from the mandated fleet norms would face heavy financial penalties,
