Govt Pushes “Team India” Vision for Agriculture Reform

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan delivered a clear message of giving a new direction to the agricultural sector at the Northern Regional Agriculture Conference held in Lucknow. He stated that the conference is not a formality, but a platform for establishing concrete decisions, action plans, and accountability, where farmers’ interests will be paramount.

NEW DELHI: He called on the Central and state Governments to work together in a “Team India” spirit. He said that regardless of which party is in power in a state, the goal of all should be the welfare of farmers and the strengthening of the agricultural sector.

He clarified that action plans would be developed on all issues raised at the conference and reviewed every three months. States were instructed to submit their proposals on time to avoid delays in plan approval and fund release.

Singh said that quality seeds are the foundation of good farming. It is essential to strengthen the entire chain of breeders, foundations, and certified seeds. Furthermore, it is important to ensure that new varieties reach the farm, not just by releasing them.

He emphasised balanced fertiliser use, saying that farmers should use fertilisers according to the soil’s needs. He also highlighted the need to make soil health cards more practical and to disseminate scientific advice to the farm.

A special campaign was called for to increase the participation of small farmers in the Kisan Credit Card Scheme. Emphasis was also placed on reliable procurement systems and transparency to increase pulses and oilseed production.

Singh stated that crop diversification, integrated farming, new technologies, and productivity enhancement are the future. He also emphasized the need to develop a new work culture in the agricultural sector, one that includes clear goals, accountability, and timely implementation.

The conference featured detailed discussions on issues such as agricultural credit, digital agriculture, the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund, farmer registries, horticulture, soil health, and marketing. States shared their experiences, leading to the adoption of successful state models in other states.
