NEW DELHI: India goes into the penultimate day of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a medal in a sport it had never won one in, a silver from its most celebrated athlete, and an entire boxing squad standing on the last step. India had won 23 medals — five gold, twelve silver and six bronze — by the close of Day 8 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the competition ending tomorrow. Ten Indian boxers reached their finals, an unprecedented number for the country at any edition of the Games, and each of them is guaranteed at least a silver before a punch is thrown today.
The single most consequential result came from a sport India had never medalled in at gold level at these Games. Asmita Dey beat Canada’s Heidi Quach by yuko in the women’s −48kg judo final at the SEC, coming from behind to force Golden Score — judo’s sudden-death extra time — before winning the contest, and becoming the first Indian judoka to take a Commonwealth Games gold. Minutes later Harsh Singh doubled the tally, beating Australia’s Joshua Katz, an Olympian and four-time Oceania champion, by waza-ari in the men’s −60kg final. Yamini Mourya added silver in the women’s −57kg to complete India’s best judo campaign at any Games.
A first in a discipline India had never won: Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh took judo golds in Glasgow within minutes of each other, and Yamini Mourya added a silver.
A first gold in a sport is worth more than a fifth gold in a familiar one. It tells a country something it did not already know about itself.

The javelin final produced the shape of result that only looks like a disappointment on the scoreboard. Neeraj Chopra threw 85.83m for silver, behind Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who peaked at 89.75m with his second attempt; Yash Vir Singh threw a personal best 85.41m for bronze. Two Indians on a Commonwealth javelin podium is a structural fact rather than a lucky afternoon, and Yash Vir Singh’s personal best in a major final — the hardest place in the sport to produce one — is the part of the evening a selector will remember longest. Chopra’s own record now reads gold at Gold Coast and silver at Glasgow across eight years, in an event that India did not contest seriously a generation ago.
Today’s boxing session is where the tally will be decided, and it is worth being precise about what has already happened. Ten finalists means ten separate paths through a draw, ten sets of medal-round nerves survived, and a squad that is deep rather than top-heavy. Twelve silvers against five golds across the whole contingent tells the same story from a different angle: India is arriving at finals in numbers, which is the part that takes a decade of coaching, facilities and international exposure to build, and converting them at a lower rate, which is largely a matter of experience that accumulates once athletes are in finals routinely. The constructive task after Glasgow is narrow and identifiable. Judo and boxing have both just demonstrated that a functioning national pipeline can be built in a combat sport within a single cycle; the useful exercise now is to write down exactly what those two federations did — coaching appointments, competition calendars, funding routes, sports-science support — and apply it deliberately to two or three more disciplines before the next Games. India’s Glasgow results suggest the method works. The opportunity is to stop discovering it by accident.
