India Take Galle by 165, and a Spinner Takes Ten

NEW DELHI: India lead the two-Test series in Sri Lanka 1-0 after a win at Galle built on an aggregate of 655 runs against 490 — and on a left-arm spinner who took ten wickets in a match his side had to win without its fastest bowler.

The first Test, played from 15 to 19 August, ended on the fifth day with India winning by 165 runs. India made 462 in the first innings and 193 in the second; Sri Lanka replied with 284 and 206. The aggregate difference — 655 to 490 — is the honest measure of the match, and it says India were better in both disciplines rather than rescued by one session.

Devdutt Padikkal was Player of the Match with 167 in the first innings and 44 in the second, an innings of the kind that decides matches on a surface that deteriorates. Manav Suthar took ten wickets across the match, including six for 55. Ten wickets in a Test is a career marker for any bowler; taking them at Galle, where visiting spinners have historically been out-bowled by the hosts, is a particular one.

Where the series turned: Galle International Stadium, venue of the first Test from 15 to 19 August 2026, which India won by 165 runs. The second and final Test begins at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, on 23 August.

Ten wickets at Galle, without the world’s best fast bowler in the side. That is not a result about one match — it is a result about a domestic system that keeps producing the next one.

At a Glance

• First Test: Galle, 15-19 August 2026 — India won by 165 runs
• India: 462 and 193
• Sri Lanka: 284 and 206
• Aggregate: 655 to 490
• Player of the Match: Devdutt Padikkal, 167 and 44
• Bowling: Manav Suthar, ten wickets in the match, including 6 for 55
• Series: India lead 1-0 in a two-Test series
• Second Test: Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, 23-27 August, 10 a.m. start
• Unavailable: Jasprit Bumrah (left knee); Washington Sundar doubtful

The context that gives the result its weight is who was not playing. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the series with a left knee injury, and Washington Sundar is unlikely to be available for the second Test. Winning a subcontinental Test without the world’s most effective fast bowler, on a pitch that asks the spinners to do the work, is the kind of result that tells you about squad depth rather than about one player.

The second and final Test begins at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on 23 August and runs to 27 August, with play from 10 a.m. The SSC surface has traditionally been flatter and slower than Galle, which usually rewards patience with the bat and puts a heavier load on the spinners across four innings rather than three.

For Indian cricket the broader point is the pipeline. Padikkal and Suthar are not established names being confirmed; they are players moving up through a domestic structure that keeps producing replacements at the exact moment senior players are unavailable. That is the part of a cricketing system that takes decades to build and only shows itself in matches like this one. A series win in Colombo next week would be the first away Test series result of the season, and India need only avoid defeat to secure it.
