NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party is organising a Pasmanda Sneh Samvad Yatra with the slogan of ‘Samman se Utthaan ki Aur’.
The yatra starts on July 27, the death anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who was an icon for Pasmanda Muslims. It will conclude on October 15, the birthday of Kalam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly raised the plight of Pasmanda Muslims and asked BJP members to reach out to them. The party now intends to bring this issue before the country.
Pasmanda means ‘left behind’ in Persian and is used by a section of Muslims to define themselves as communities who are historically and socially oppressed by caste. While Dalits among Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists can avail reservation and contest from seats reserved for SCs, those among Muslims and Christians cannot.
