President Droupadi Murmu on three-nation visit to Africa

President Droupadi Murmu departed from New Delhi for Algeria on October 13 for the first leg of her week-long threenation visit in Africa.

The President will be on a visit to three African nations: Algeria, Mauritania and Malawi from October 13-19, the Ministry of External Affairs had said earlier on October 9.

Notably, this will be the first-ever visit by the President of India to the three African nations: Algeria, Mauritania and Malawi. The visit aims to further strengthen and expand India’s relation with countries in Africa.

The historic visit comes a year after the African Union was made a permanent member of the G 20 during India’s presidency. During her weeklong visit, President Murmu will hold bilateral meetings and interact with Indian diaspora.

Economic Forum

On the first leg of the visit, the President Murmu will visit Algeria. During the visit, President will hold bilateral meetings with her counterpart AbdelmadjidTebboune. The President will also address the India-Algeria Economic Forum and the Sidi Abdellah Science and Technology Pole University. She will also inaugurate the India Corner at Hamma Garden at Jardin d’essai.

“Several Algerian dignitaries, including President of the Council of Nation(Upper House of the Algerian Parliament) and President of National People’s Assembly (Lower House of the Algerian Parliament) are expected to call on her”, according to the MEA On the second leg of the visit, President Murmu will visit Mauritania on October 16. The visit is taking place at a crucial time when Mauritania is holding the presidency of the African Union.

During the visit, the President will hold bilateral meetings with the President of Mauritania Mohamed OuldCheikh El Ghazouani. She will also interact with Indian diaspora. The visit will provide further impetus to IndiaMauritania bilateral relations. On the last leg of her visit, she will visit Malawi from October 17 to 19. The President will hold bilateral meetings with Malawi’s leadership and interact with key trade and industry leaders and the Indian diaspora.

“The visit will reaffirm our strong commitment to further strengthen our existing friendly and cordial relations with Malawi,” the MEA statement added.
