Veteran British industrialist of Indian origin Lord Swraj Paul (94 years) died on August 21 in a hospital in London. He was recently admitted to the hospital where he breathed his last in the presence of family members.

Lord Paul, who was also chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, was appointed a Labour life peer as Baron Paul of Marylebone, in 1996. He went on to become the first person of Indian heritage to hold the post of deputy speaker in the House of Lords, in 2008.

Expressing deep condolences on the demise of Lord Swraj Paul, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter-, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Swraj Paul ji. His contribution to industry, philanthropy and public service in Britain and his unwavering support for close relations with India will always be remembered. I miss my many meetings with him. Condolences to his family and fans.”

Lord Paul, born on February 18, 1931 in Jalandhar, Punjab, was the founder of the UK-based Caparo Group of Industries. In the 60s, he went to the UK for the treatment of his younger daughter Ambika’s cancer but after the death of the 4-year-old daughter, he founded the Ambika Paul Foundation as a charitable trust.
