On June 11, the United States and Armenia marked a significant milestone in their bilateral relations with the signing of an agreement on “mutual assistance” of their customs services. The development emerged during latest session of the US-Armenia Strategic Dialogue convened in Yerevan, chaired by James O’Brien, the US assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia, alongside Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

“Our discussions focused on democratic development, economic diversification, defence reforms, and EuroAtlantic cooperation,” O’Brien tweeted after the discussion. Highlighting the expanding bilateral agenda critical for Armenia’s resilience and sustainable development, Mirzoyan in his opening remarks said, “Today’s meeting is yet another expression of high-level political dialogue between our two countries that will give another impetus to the evolving partnership between Armenia and the United States.”

He added, “The bilateral agenda continues to expand and include dimensions critical for the resilience and sustainable development of Armenia.”

Exchange of information

During the talks, an agreement on “mutual assistance of their customs authorities” was signed by Rustam Badasian, the head of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee, and Kristina Kvien, the US ambassador in Yerevan. While details of the agreement were not disclosed, O’Brien mentioned that it entails an “exchange of information” between the US and Armenian customs services, aiming to bolster bilateral commercial ties.

Last year, US-Armenian trade amounted to $670 million, with US exports to Armenia comprising a significant portion. However, Armenia’s trade with Russia stood at $7.3 billion in 2023, indicating the complexity of Armenia’s economic relations amid geopolitical shifts.

Russian warning

Despite warnings from Russian officials about potential damage to relations if Armenia continues to lean towards the West, O’Brien reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening defence and security ties with Yerevan. Mirzoyan expressed Armenia’s interest in further exploring cooperation opportunities for defence transformation, highlighting the ongoing evolution of the bilateral partnership between Armenia and the United States.
