NEW DELHI: Ireland is planning to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Asia and the Pacific, with a focus on deeper ties with India in trade, investment, and digital transformation. While emphasising historical cultural and political connections with India, Ireland is also addressing the China challenge.

The Irish Government has launched its Asia Pacific strategy, aiming to expand across the region and foster economic growth worldwide. “We have a strong economic relationship but also a strong cultural relationship (with India),” Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin said in Dublin on October 24.

“We want to deepen that and we’re launching our Asia Pacific strategy to support our continued ambitions to expand across Asia- Pacific, which will fuel economic growth into the future across the world,” Martin said. The nation’s Asia Pacific Strategy, which aimed for EUR 100 billion in trade with the region by 2025, has already surpassed this target, demonstrating the strength of their economic ties.

Martin, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, highlighted the significance of both the strong economic and cultural relationship with India. Ireland’s goal is to support ongoing ambitions to expand in the Asia Pacific, driving global economic growth.

Martin, known as the Tanaiste in Ireland, has a pivotal role in advancing the Global Ireland strategy.

Ireland’s renewed commitment to the Asia Pacific region highlights India’s crucial role. The establishment of a new Consulate General in Mumbai demonstrates their dedication to expanding their presence in the region.
