NEW DELHI: Several countries in South America, West Asia, and Africa have expressed interest in acquiring the indigenous Akash missile system, according to defence sources as reported by India Today.

The Akash missile system, which has already secured a significant export order from Armenia, is gaining attention from nations like Brazil in South America, Egypt in Africa, and other friendly countries.

The prowess of the Akash Missile system was recently showcased during the Astrashakti exercise conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF). In this exercise, a single Akash missile system demonstrated its capabilities by engaging four unmanned aerial targets simultaneously.

During the exercise, the Akash firing unit, equipped with Firing Level Radar (FLR), a Firing Control Centre (FCC), and two Akash Air Force Launchers (AAFL) with five armed missiles, effectively engaged the four targets. The FLR detected and tracked the air scenario, and the targets were updated to a higher echelon.

The Akash firing unit efficiently assigned the targets and launched missiles, successfully neutralising all four targets simultaneously at a maximum range of around 30 km.

This achievement establishes India as the first country to demonstrate the capability of engaging four targets simultaneously at approximately 30 km ranges through command guidance using a single firing unit.

The Akash weapon system, designed by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by BEL / BDL and other companies, has been in deployment by the Indian Air Force and Indian Army for the past one decade.
