NEW DELHI: In a decisive triumph, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi secured third consecutive six-year term as the President of Egypt, garnering an overwhelming 89.6 per cent of the votes.
The electoral milestone unfolded against the backdrop of Egypt grappling with a protracted economic downturn and endeavors to navigate potential repercussions from the ongoing conflict in Gaza, situated adjacent to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
For some voters, the recent escalation of hostilities in Gaza served as a catalyst for supporting President Sisi. Over time, Sisi has adeptly positioned himself as a stalwart of stability within a region marked by volatility—a narrative that has resonated not only with the domestic electorate but has also proven persuasive in garnering financial backing from key allies in the Gulf and the Western world.
The voting process spanned three days with concerted efforts from both state and domestic media to stimulate turnout. According to the election authority, the participation rate reached 66.8 per cent, a notable increase from the 41 per cent recorded in the preceding presidential election held in 2018.
While the electoral landscape featured three additional candidates, a prominent contender withdrew from the race in October.
Advocates of President Sisi contend that his administration places paramount importance on security, asserting that certain demographic segments have experienced positive outcomes under his governance.
