New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts for the procurement of improved Akash Weapon System (AWS), besides 12 Weapon Locating Radars WLR Swathi. Both these weapon systems will be procurred for the Indian Army at the cost of over Rs 9,100 crore.
The contract for improved Akash was signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited for over Rs 8,160 crore. The weapon system will be bought for the third and fourth regiments of Army Air Defence. It comprises live missiles, ground support equipment and launchers with upgrades. A short range surface to air missile, the AWS is designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The contract for WLR Swathi (Plains) was signed with Bharat Electronic Limited (BEL) at a cost of over Rs 990 crore.
