NEW DELHI: Medical students who returned from China, Ukraine and the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic have got relief from the Supreme Court. The apex court has allowed such students to clear the MBBS final exam in two attempts as per the existing syllabus and guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC) without registration in any medical college in India.
A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath disposed of all the petitions by the medical students, modifying the Centre’s suggestion to allow them only one attempt as a one-time measure. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, said a committee was constituted by the government on the issue in view of the court’s direction.
The apex court was hearing petitions by medical students who had completed seven semesters in their respective foreign universities and had to return to India due to the pandemic and complete their undergraduate medical course through online mode.
