NEW DELHI: A bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud refused to hear the petition of 14 opposition parties that had approached the Supreme Court against the central government, alleging misuse of central agencies. The recent raids by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) were mentioned in the petition.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing on behalf of the opposition parties, said that 14 political parties represent 42% of the electorate of the country. If they are affected, people will also be affected. The petition sought issuance of a fresh set of guidelines governing matters such as arrest, remand and bail.
The top court said that it is not possible to lay down general guidelines without knowing the facts of a particular case. The top court told the petitioners to come back to it in the event of individual criminal case or multiple cases. Thereafter, the Supreme Court declined to entertain the petition and allowed the petition to be withdrawn.
