DOWNDETECTOR, a website that tracks outages, recorded over 3,00,000 Facebook outages and over 47,000 outage reports for Instagram worldwide last week.
Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta said that they are working to fix the problem. “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X social media.
In a later post, Stone said that the issue was fixed. “Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Stone said.
Users experienced issues around 8:56 pm on March 5, reporting difficulties in loading content on their feeds. Issues were being reported with the app, login, and uploading content.
London-based internet monitoring firm Netblocks also reported on X that four Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads, were facing outages related to login sessions in multiple countries. Meta’s status dashboard indicated that the application programming interface (API) for WhatsApp Business was also experiencing issues. Downdetector received approximately 200 reports of outages for WhatsApp.
The Meta outage quickly became a trending topic on X, formerly Twitter, as numerous users reported sudden logouts from Meta-owned social media platforms. “Cyberattack,” “Mark Zuckerberg,” and “Instagram Facebook Down” emerged as top-ranking trends. As Musk’s platform remained operational and users flocked to report the issues being faced on Meta platforms, X boss was swift to seize the opportunity to showcase the “superiority” of his platform.
