NEW DELHI: United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s India visit for the G20 Summit in New Delhi attracted considerable media attention back home.
“Sunak and Modi bolster UK-India trade talks”, said the Financial Times, and in another of its stories, the headline read “US and EU back new India-Middle East transport corridor”.
The multimodal transport and energy corridor between India and Europe that will pass through the Middle East is seen by experts as a breakthrough in post-Partition India’s quest for deeper connectivity with the regions to the north-west of the subcontinent.
Reporting on the G20 Summit, a Guardian headline said “’Warm and productive’: Sunak positive after talks with Modi at G20”. According to the report “Rishi Sunak and Narendra Modi met on Saturday for what the British prime minister called a “very warm and productive discussion” covering everything from trade to cooperation on education, research and defence.”
The Sky News observed, “Rishi Sunak says he is confident a trade deal will be struck between the UK and India after meeting with Narendra Modi at the G20 summit.” The Independent quoted the Prime Minister as saying, “UK and India can ‘work through’ trade deal obstacles”.
