GYM enthusiasts and fitness aficionados may soon need to rethink their reliance on protein supplements. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), under the Ministry of Health, is set to issue a public advisory regarding the potential health risks associated with these supplements, following numerous reports of serious kidney and cardiac issues among users.
An informed official, who requested anonymity, highlighted the growing concern: “Youngsters and gym trainers are consuming protein supplements without proper guidance, leading to significant health complications like kidney ailments.” The official emphasized the lack of awareness about the correct usage of these products, making a general advisory essential to prevent their misuse.
Protein supplements, categorized under the nutraceutical regulations of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), are meant for sportspersons and come with specific guidelines. Despite these regulations, the improper use of protein supplements has surged, paralleling the growth of the market. According to Modor Intelligence, a market intelligence and advisory firm, India’s protein supplement market, valued at approximately $1.4 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $1.88 billion by 2029.
Health ministry officials did not respond to queries, but industry experts have voiced their concerns.. Suyash Bhandari, a nutritionist at iThrive Essentials, stressed the importance of understanding the appropriate intake. “People should know how much protein they need based on their body weight.
Ideally, 80% of protein should come from dietary sources. Many individuals overlook necessary lifestyle changes and directly opt for supplements, leading to skin issues, bloating, acne, and lactose intolerance due to misuse and overuse.” Yuvraj Datta, Director of Manufacturing & Process Excellence at Zeon Lifesciences, a nutraceutical manufacturer, reiterated the importance of ingredient awareness. “Consumers should be informed about the ingredients in their products. Our company adheres to all compliance requirements to ensure safety.” As the market for protein supplements continues to grow, this advisory aims to educate the public on safe practices and the importance of proper guidance.
