A leap forward in LCA programme

NEW DELHI: In a major boost to India’s indigenous fighter jet programme, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A fighter jets are soon going to be inducted into the IAF.

Deliveries of the 83 Mark 1A aircraft contracted three years ago will begin next month, paving the way for the induction of a new squadron equipped with these advanced fighters in March-April 2024.

This marks a significant step forward for the LCA programme, which has been in development for several decades. The Mark 1A variant has enhanced capabilities compared to its predecessor, incorporating improved radar, electronic warfare systems, and weapon-carrying capacity. This advanced platform has reportedly bolstered the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) confidence in the domesticallydeveloped aircraft, leading to a proposal for the procurement of an additional 97 Mark 1A jets.

Trials and operationalisation of the LCA programme has been very successful. The proposed acquisition of 97 additional aircraft signifies the IAF’s growing reliance on the Tejas to replace its aging fleet of fighter jets. This not only strengthens India’s air defence capabilities but also marks a major milestone in the nation’s quest for self-reliance in the defence sector.

The induction of the new squadron equipped with Mark 1A fighters will likely be deployed at a strategically important location, potentially along the western border. This deployment further underscores the IAF’s confidence in the Tejas’ capabilities to handle critical combat missions.

The progress of the LCA program and the planned induction of the Mark 1A squadron represent a significant achievement for India’s aerospace industry. It showcases the country’s ability to design, develop, and manufacture advanced fighter jets, placing it among a select group of nations with such capabilities. This success not only boosts national security but also paves the way for further advancement in indigenous defence technology, contributing to the “Make in India” initiative and solidifying India’s position as a major player in the global aerospace sector.
