PRIME Minister Narendra Modi assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the statehood will be restored and the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held soon. Speaking at an event in Srinagar on June 20, PM Modi declared that “time is not far” when the people of J&K will elect a new government, hinting at the imminent return of full statehood to the union territory.

Participating in the ‘Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K’ event at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar here, the Prime Minister said the Government has taken the recent terror attacks very seriously and will not hesitate to teach a lesson to the enemies of Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister’s remarks come nearly five years after the Central government’s decision to revoke Article 370 and bifurcate the former state into two Union Territories in August 2019.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already issued the primary notification asking the political parties to apply for election symbols.

In all likelihood, Assembly elections would be held before the deadline of September 30 set by the Supreme Court. During his address, PM Modi highlighted the progress made in the region, citing the inauguration of 84 major developmental projects valued at over Rs 1,500 crore. He also emphasised the construction of new national highways and the world’s highest bridge over the Chenab river as symbols of advancement. He also distributed the appointment letters to about 2000 youth who have been recruited in the Government sector.

PM Modi lauded the people of J&K for their overwhelming participation in the recent Lok Sabha elections and maintained that the youth of the region have shown a strong belief in democracy. He said that the slogan of Insaniyat, Jamhooriyat and Kashmiriyat given by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is becoming a reality now in the region.

This is PM Modi’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after taking oath as Prime Minister for a third straight term.
