NEW DELHI: The fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Joseph C Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The TVK has secured or leading in 108 seats, putting it well ahead of its rivals and marking a major political breakthrough in the state’s electoral landscape. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is in the second position with 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is in the third spot with 47 seats.
The Indian National Congress (INC) managed to win 5 seats, and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) secured 4 seats. The BJP secured only one of the 27 seats it contested this time.
Chief Minister M K Stalin has conceded defeat in the election, accepting the verdict of the people and congratulating the winning side. He himself lost his Kolathur seat to TVK’s VS Babu.
Whereas TVK leader Vijay has won from both the constituencies, Perambur and Tiruchi East, he contested.
However, Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, saw off the challenge from another TVK leader – Selvam D – to retain his Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni seat.
Vijay’s party is likely to fall tantalisingly short of the majority mark. Support from smaller parties could be enough to push it past the 118-seat mark.
Parties in the fray with a small number of seats include Pattali Makkal Katchi, Congress, IUML, CPI(M), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and CPI.
