INDIA’S profound economic transformation in the last decade has been fuelled by a series of innovative initiatives, one of the most impactful among those being Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to ‘Make in India’.

Launched on September 25, 2014, the Make in India campaign has propelled the country to become a global manufacturing powerhouse within a span of 10 years.

Describing it as a game-changer, in his radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi said: “As India looks forward to its centennial year in 2047, the success of Make in India will be the backbone to achieving its goal of becoming a developed nation.” “Today, it gives me immense joy to see that the poor, the middle class and MSMEs are getting a lot of benefit from this campaign. This campaign has provided an opportunity to people of every class to showcase their talent,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi further pointed out, “Now we are mainly focusing on two things. The first is ‘Quality’, that is, goods made in our country should be of global standards and the other is ‘Vocal for Local.. That means, local products should get maximum promotion.”

He reiterated his Government’s commitment to encourage domestic manufacturing through “all possible ways” During the last 10 years, the Make in India has turned India from one of the fragile five economies of the world to the top five. The inflow of foreign direct investment has risen by a whopping 119 per cent. The country leads in the development of world class infrastructure.

From traditional industries like toy manufacturing to cutting-edge fields like semiconductor fabrication and defence production, all manufacturing sectors are seeing an incredible surge. The spirit of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ has reshaped India’s defence landscape.

From one of the largest importers of defence products, India is not only meeting the bulk of its needs through indigenous production but its defence exports have registered a 21-fold rise. With strategic reforms, investmentfriendly policies, and a focus on infrastructure development, the initiative has enhanced India’s industrial capabilities.

As India looks forward to its centennial year in 2047, the success of Make in India will be the backbone to achieving its goal of becoming a developed nation.”

The launch of the Semiconductor Ecosystem Development Programme and the remarkable growth of the UPI further underscore India’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement. Aligned with India’s vision of becoming ‘atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant), the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme was introduced to enhance the country’s manufacturing capabilities and boost exports. The scheme covers 14 key sectors aimed at fostering investment in cuttingedge technology and promoting global competitiveness.

As India moves forward with initiatives like the PM GatiShakti, it is well on its way to achieving sustained economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening its position on the global stage.
