SETTING a benchmark for any political party in creating a model manifesto while incumbent, the BJP has released its ‘Sankalp Patra’ for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Underlining the Government’s achievements during the last decade with ambitious plans for the next many years, the 76-page document bears the unmistakeable imprimatur of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It has an undertone of quiet confidence running through it. The assurance is of ‘hitting the road up and running’ on winning a third term.

No extravagant plans

The manifesto does not unveil extravagant plans because the Government feels they are not electorally necessary. It not only outlines the party’s governance philosophy but also charts a strategic vision for the nation’s future The manifesto talks about PM Modi’s legacy of ten years, his a vision for the next 25 years and promises to lay the foundation for India’s future in his third term. The overarching theme revolves around ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’, symbolising the trust that the public places in the Prime Minister.

Legacy

The party emphasises its philosophy of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and how this approach, as much as a macroeconomic transformation based on good governance and major reforms has now inspired youth to aim for a Viksit Bharat.

The confidence of the BJP that it has something to offer to all sections of society is reflected in schemes and policy ideas for poor, youth, women, farmers and senior citizens.

Welfare schemes

Understandably, its biggest achievements – infrastructure and massive welfare schemes for housing, health and free rations – are shown as examples of not just what was done, but what can be done as well.

While good governance will be emphasised, civil reforms are also being planned to be initiated. The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a pressing need felt by India’s minorities, and the BJP’s commitment to establish the same has been made in the manifesto.

Once voted to power, the party is committed to making ‘One Nation, One Poll’ a reality, which will lead to fiscal consolidation while giving greater fiscal independence to local self-governments.
