Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the United States of America six times in nine years. Among the American Presidents whom he has interacted with since assuming office in 2014 are Barack Obama, Donald Trump and now, Joe Biden. Yet, the June 21-24 (2023) visit was very special. It was officially the highest-ranked ‘State visit’, which none of the earlier visits was.
In 2014, Prime Minister Modi had visited the US what was then categorised as a working visit. In 2016, he made a working lunch visit, and in 2017, his trip was designated as an official working visit. PM Modi’s 2019 visit marked a notable moment in the relationship between the two countries. During the Houston visit, he participated in a huge rally that garnered attention both in India and the United States.

On September 23, 2021, PM Modi arrived in Washington on his first visit since the outbreak of Covid-19. It was also his first trip to the US after President Joe Biden assumed office. During this visit, PM Modi had a tightly-packed schedule that encompassed attending the Quad summit, delivering a speech at the 76th United Nations General Assembly, and engaging in a bilateral meeting with the US President. As per the Institute of New Europe, the United States is the country to which PM Modi has made the maximum number of visit since assuming office in 2014.
