FIFTY years after it was created as a venue for exhibitions and conventions, Pragati Maidan has got a new makeover, and a new name.
The revamped International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), now called Bharat Mandapam, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26. With an area of about 123 acres, the new IECC is India’s largest destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE).
The modern complex is bracketed among the top 10 exhibition and convention complexes in the world. Level 3 of the convention centre can seat 7,000 people, more than the approximately 5,500 who can be accommodated in the Sydney Opera House in Australia. The centre also boasts of an amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 3,000. The state-of-the-art exhibition halls offer seven innovative spaces to showcase products, innovations, and ideas.
The new hallmark of the country’s development will be the venue for the G20 Summit to be hosted by India on September 9-10.
