NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forthcoming visit to India signals a pivotal moment in New Delhi-Moscow relations, highlighting the enduring strategic partnership between the two nations amid a shifting global order.

Scheduled to take place in the first week of December, the visit will set the tone for deepening cooperation across defence, energy, trade, and technology sectors while reflecting both governments’ shared interest in maintaining a balanced multipolar world.

The diplomatic groundwork for this high-profile engagement has been intensively laid. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Moscow underscored India’s commitment to nurturing old ties even as global alignments evolve.

During his meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, Jaishankar reviewed the state of bilateral cooperation, including progress under the Inter-Governmental Commission framework. His discussions also covered energy partnership expansion, connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor, and collaboration in pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, and emerging technologies.

Jaishankar’s Moscow mission followed a series of quiet yet significant preparatory interactions at senior official levels, reflecting both sides’ intent to ensure substance and symbolism align in the upcoming summit. Complementing this diplomatic momentum, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev, one of Putin’s most trusted aides, visited New Delhi days ahead of the summit. Patrushev’s meetings in the Capital included detailed discussions with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, focusing on the strategic contours of the India-Russia relationship and critical issues on the bilateral and global agenda.

The two top security officials reportedly held consultations on regional security, counterterrorism, and defence industry collaboration as part of regular ‘2+2’ dialogue mechanisms, underlining the importance both sides place on robust security and intelligence cooperation. The upcoming visit of the Russian President will also seek to inject fresh energy into bilateral trade, which has surged despite Western sanctions on Russia. Both sides are expected to explore mechanisms to stabilize payment channels, diversify supply chains, and advance cooperation within the BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation frameworks. For India, Putin’s visit comes at a time when New Delhi’s diplomatic engagements span Washington, Brussels, and Beijing – underscoring its delicate balancing act in global geopolitics.
