Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated boxer, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain for winning gold medal at Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.
The 26-year-old Nikhat, a boxer from Telangana, who entered as the defending champion in the 50 kg weight category, defeated Vietnam’s two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam 5-0. This is her second consecutive gold medal. She has become the second Indian boxer to do so after Mary Kom. At the same time, in the 75 kg category, Lovlina defeated Australian boxer Caitlin Parker 5-2. This is India’s fourth gold in this championship.
Earlier the Prime Minister had congratulated Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora for their gold medal-winning performance in the Women’s World Boxing Championships a day ago.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Haryana’s boxer Nitu put up a stupendous performance to defeat 2022 Asian Championships bronze medalist Lutsekhan Altantseg of Mongolia 5-0 and claim the title in the minimum weight category (48kg). Saweety became the light heavyweight world champion with a 4-3 win over China’s Wang Li 4-3 in the 81 kg weight category.
