LET’S ALL UNITE TO CONSERVE WATER

WATER CRISIS IN BENGALURU – PART II

LET’S unite to save water every day and put an end to the water crisis! It’s an urgent call for action as the water crisis in our country is worsening at an alarming rate. It’s our collective responsibility to ensure we do not hand down this dire water scarcity as a legacy to our future generations.

The stakes are high, and if we fail to curb water wastage now, we’re heading towards a future where the consequences will be ours to bear. Imagine a campaign to save water in every nook and corner of our country – such an initiative would significantly contribute to our nation’s prosperity and progress.

Whenever we see water, let’s remember the wise words of Rahim Das Ji, “Rahiman Pani Rakhiye, Bin Pani Sab Soon.” His prophecy highlights the barrenness that comes with the absence of water.

I want to share a startling fact: daily, our beloved country, India, witnesses the wastage of 48.41 billion liters of water. According to the National Green Tribunal’s records, a staggering 33 per cent of Indians leave the tap running while brushing or shaving. With household taps dispensing 6 liters of water per minute, just five minutes of negligence can waste up to 30 liters of water.

Imagine the impact if each of us decided to keep the tap off while brushing or shaving. By making this simple change, every individual can save 30 liters of water each day. It’s time for us to band together and spread this message to every household and individual across the nation.

RO purifier

But the tale of wastage doesn’t end here. Did you know? For every liter of water purified by an RO purifier, three liters are wasted. This means that if your household purifies 15 liters of water daily, an additional 45 liters are needlessly lost. We must start reusing this waste water for tasks like washing clothes and watering our gardens.

Let me also draw your attention to the water footprint of plastic – producing just one kilogram of plastic consumes 180 liters of water. Shockingly, in 2021, the average Indian used up to 15 kilograms of plastic. Essentially, we’re each using plastic equivalent to 2,700 liters of water. By saying no to plastic, we can save this precious resource.

Furthermore, wasting a single roti equates to a loss of 35 liters of water, underscoring the massive water consumption agriculture demands – a whopping 92 per cent of global water usage. The United Nations reports that humans waste 1.3 billion tons of food annually worldwide, translating to approximately 74 kilograms per person. Considering it takes 1,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of wheat, the water waste associated with food wastage is monumental.

Wake-up call

A concerning wake-up call came from the Telangana High Court, warning that Hyderabad could mirror Bangalore’s water predicament if immediate conservation measures aren’t adopted. The haunting memory of Chennai’s severe water crisis, which led to the closure of schools and colleges and required police deployment for water body protection, still lingers.

With India housing 18 per cent of the world’s population but only 4 per cent of its water resources, and with 80 per cent of our water used in agriculture, it’s evident that a multi-faceted approach is crucial. Let’s come together to tackle this challenge, for the sake of our planet, our people, and our future.
