NEW DELHI: Established in 1922 to produce books and periodicals propagating principles of the Hindu faith for the masses, the iconic Gita Press of Gorakhpur is celebrating its 100 years journey.
The anniversary events were inaugurated by the thenPresident Ramnath Kovind on June 4, 2022 and ended with PM Modi’s visit on July 7.
Starting in a rented room by Jaydal Goenka and Hanuman Prasad Poddar as a unit of the Govind Bhawan Karyalaya, Kolkata, Gita Press is today the world’s largest publication centre of Hindu religious literature.
Since its establishment, it has published more than 140 million copies of Bhagvad Gita and 100 million copies of the Ramcharitamanas, at subsidised price.
Its publications are available in English, Hindi and other Indian languages throughout India and in major foreign capitals. The art gallery at the press has the lilas (works or plays) of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna portrayed in 684 paintings by famed artists of the past and present.
Gita Press archives contain over 3,500 manuscripts including over 100 interpretations of the Bhagvad Gita.
