PRIME Minister Narendra Modi will visit the US sometime in February, US President Donald Trump announced on January 28 as he termed the ties between the two countries as “very good” and claimed that India will do the “right thing” on illegal immigration.
Trump’s statements came hours after a call with PM Modi — one that the White House described as “productive”, and one in which Trump asked India to buy more made-in-America security equipment and move towards a “fair” trading partnership.
In an address to Republican lawmakers after the call, Trump threatened tariffs against India, clubbing it with China and Brazil as countries that “mean the US harm” and exploited the US market, Hindustan Times reported.
PM Modi on January 27 spoke to Trump over the phone and congratulated him for his second term. This conversation was the first between the two leaders after Trump was sworn in for his second term on January 20 PM Modi said that India and the US have a trusted and mutually beneficial relationship. Both countries will work together for global peace, prosperity and security.
The Prime Minister wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “Glad to speak to my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a trusted and mutually beneficial partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and global peace, prosperity and security.”
It is worth noting that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated in President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony as a special envoy on behalf of PM Modi. He also handed over a special letter from the Prime Minister to Trump.
