NEW DELHI: While the expansion of BRICS did not go according to the Chinese agenda in the context of its escalating strategic contestation with US, what hogged the headlines was the brief talk between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
True to its characteristic, Beijing tried to give it a sinister twist, but India exposed its lie. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that the meeting was organised at India’s request and it was a “candid and in-depth exchange of views”. Indian officials contradicted this, claiming it was in response to “a pending Chinese request”.
Incidentally, this was the second meeting between the two leaders since the Galwan Valley clash in 2022. PM Modi and Chinese President Xi will meet again at the G20 Summit in New Delhi.
